USA vs. Australia football match report – July 27, 2021
U.S. women’s national team striker Alex Morgan had a goal that was not recognized by the VAR when Vlatko Andonovski’s side drew 0-0 Australia in the final game of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics group stage.
The result means the USWNT will qualify for second place while Australia waits for later results to see if they qualify as the best third place team.

“It was a great test for us today to see that the players can implement the game plan very, very well,” Andonovski said at a press conference after the game.
“So whatever we have to do about that [next] Game, we’ll present it to them and then let them do their job. “
The USWNT continued their average form in this tournament, with the Matildas dominating possession early on. In the first 15 minutes, Tony Gustavsson’s team had 62% possession.
“The only thing that surprised me a little was that they were a bit passive when they pressed and I’m used to seeing them very, very aggressive,” said Gustavsson, who used to work as an assistant coach at USWNT, in a press conference.
Mary Fowler, a late substitute in Caitlin Foord’s starting XI and making her Olympic debut, had an excellent opportunity to put Australia ahead in the 20th minute but her header bounced off the crossbar.

Gustavsson confirmed after the match that Foord had felt something in her leg and that she was rested as a precaution.
It appeared that Morgan had put USWNT ahead in the 33rd minute when they headed Kelley O’Hara’s corner into the net, but a VAR review showed her elbow was just offside and the goal was not recognized.
Australia’s dominance of possession continued into the second half, but they couldn’t count anymore.
Christen Press had a perfect opportunity to give USWNT the lead after scoring a through ball behind Ellie Carpenter on 56 minutes, but a heavy touch caused the ball to go away from her.
In a restrained game with few chances, neither team could break through with a stalemate in the closing stages, a fair result between two teams that were far from their best form.
