Titans’ Ryan Tannehill: NFL’s New COVID Protocols “Forced My Hand To Get The Vaccine”
The NFL’s new COVID protocols have spurred many players to get vaccinated over the past few weeks. This also includes Titan’s quarterback Ryan Tannehill starting.
Tannehill announced at the Titans’ training camp that he was about to be vaccinated. As he told TitansInsider.com, the NFL’s new protocols played a big part in his decision.
“The NFL kind of made it clear what it wanted,” said Tannehill. “If you don’t keep your turn, they’ll try to make life miserable for you with the protocols.”

In the past few weeks, the NFL has been outlining changes to its COVID logs. The most important among them is that teams with a COVID outbreak among unvaccinated players may be forced to give up games if they cannot be postponed. This, along with stricter rules for unvaccinated players, helped convince Tannehill to get the vaccine.
“I wouldn’t have got the vaccine if it weren’t for the protocols they enforce for us. I think it’s a personal decision for everyone that everyone has to make the best decision for themselves and their families, ”said Tannehill. “That’s the way we think in this building. But they kind of force us to, and they ended up having a lot of hands in this building through the protocols that everyone has their own opinion about. It is what it is.”
Tannehill’s greatest concern was being on the field for his team. He believes the vaccine gives him the best chance of doing this.
“I love this game and I love this team,” said Tannehill. “I want to be able to compete and do the things I think are important to build chemistry and win soccer games. That ultimately forced me to get the vaccine.”
Tennessee had the first major COVID outbreak in the NFL last season. At one point, the team had up to 24 confirmed infections and had to postpone their game against the Steelers for a week in week 4. It was the NFL’s first postponement of the 2020 NFL season.
The NFL is trying to avoid postponements at all costs in 2021, which is one of the reasons it changed its COVID protocols.
Tannehill played in all 16 regular season games for the Titans last season. It was the first time he did this since 2015. He will try to do the same in 2021 while avoiding potential COVID-related issues.
