Serena Williams from Wimbledon with a leg damage after a slip on the slippery heart court docket

Serena Williams’ Wimbledon has come to an unfortunate premature end. The American tennis star sustained a leg injury in her first-round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

Williams slipped and fell on the smooth lawn of Center Court at Wimbledon. She tried to play through her service game with the 3-3 draw in the first set, but could not continue.

As a result, she withdrew from the game and allowed Sasnovich to move forward.

The Wimbledon turf attracted a lot of attention in the first two days of the tournament, especially on center court. Many players have slipped on the surface as the rain made the courts unusually slippery.

Several tennis stars have spoken out about the problem. The number one man in the men’s world, Novak Djokovic, joked about the conditions on the pitch after beating Jack Draper in four sets.

“To be honest, I can’t remember crashing on the pitch that often,” said Djokovic.

And in the wake of Williams’ exit, British fan favorite Andy Murray also shot onto the pitch.

Brutal for @serenawilliams but the center court is extremely slippery out there. It’s not easy to move around there.

Roger Federer’s match, which took place immediately before Williams’s, was also affected by a slip. The number 6 of the tournament emerged with a win after his opponent Adrian Mannarino was eliminated before the fifth set.

Nevertheless, Federer was in shock after Williams’ early exit.

“Oh my god, I can’t believe it,” said Federer after hearing the news via Mike McIntyre at his press conference.

Meanwhile, other devastated tennis fans took to Twitter to send their good wishes to Williams – and to let Wimbledon know of the problems their slippery grass is causing.

There is no other athlete I defend harder for than Serena Williams. NOBODY. So that was shocking and heartbreaking to see. She is out of #Wimbledon in the first round. Just happened. Tried tearfully through an injury but couldn’t continue.

Serena Williams had to retire in the first round of #Wimbledon after an obvious injury.

It’s only the second time in her career that she has retired from a big game.
