Olympic soccer desk 2021: up to date tables, outcomes, outcomes of the ladies’s match

In the group stage of the 2021 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament, eight teams will survive and advance to the quarter-finals to keep their dream of winning a gold medal alive in Tokyo.

The 12 nations battling for Olympic glory were divided into three groups of four teams each, called Groups EG, to avoid confusion with the men’s tournament groups AD. The two first-placed finishers automatically get a place in the quarters and the two best third-placed finishers complete the elite group of eight.

This is how the women’s Olympic soccer group stage works

The four opponents of each group compete against each other on three match days in the classic round robin format: July 21, July 24 and July 27, whereby the teams receive three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss earn.

At the end of the last game day on July 27th, the final scoring will decide the fate of the individual teams. The position in the group either binds a team to a specific quarter-final match or sends some countries for an early trip home.

If the teams are even tied, predetermined tiebreakers are used one after the other until all ties are resolved. If after the sixth tiebreaker there is still a deadlock between two or more teams, FIFA will draw the lot (i.e. pull a name out of the hat). Here is the order of the tiebreakers, as detailed in the official tournament rules:

  1. Superior goal difference in all group matches
  2. Most goals scored in all group matches
  3. Most points scored in group matches between teams that are tied
  4. Superior goal difference in group matches between teams that are tied
  5. Most goals in all group matches between teams that are drawn
  6. Best behavior result based on yellow / red cards received in all group matches
  7. FIFA draw

The two best teams in third place will be determined using the same tie-break mechanisms, with tie-breaks No. 3-5 not being applicable for obvious reasons.
